Despite the weak state of sterling and the current economic doom and gloom millions of British tourists will still be taking a holiday abroad this winter.  Jetting off to far flung destinations across the Caribbean and the Far East. 

But there is one short haul winter sun option that is located much closer to home.  As the seven specks of Spain that comprise the Canary Islands are just fours flying time from the UK.  And guarantee good weather at a fraction of the price of these more exotic locations.

The Canaries are located just off the coast of Africa and are the second most visited region in Spain after Catalonia.  Thanks to their great year round climate, excellent beaches and high standards of accommodation.

Some of the islands, such as Tenerife, are little too crowded and popular for some people’s taste.  But others, such as Lanzarote, remain largely unspoiled.  Especially outside of the main resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise.

Here visitors can expect to enjoy temperatures in the 20´s (Celsius) and plenty of sunshine hours.  With many holidaymakers visiting specifically over the Christmas and New Year period so they can celebrate on the beach.

During the winter months Playa Blanca in the south of the island really comes into its own.  As this is the southern most resort on the island – which means it tends to enjoy higher temperatures and more sunshine hours than other destination on the island.

Playa Blanca is also home to one of the largest selections of hotels and holiday villas in Lanzarote.  Most of which have been built over the last five to ten years – offering modern amenities and facilities at very reasonable prices.

For example a weeks stay in a standard villa in Playa Blanca costs from around £500 upwards depending on the time of travel.  Which will secure a two bedroom property with accommodation for a party of up to five people.

Factor in cheap flights to the island with carriers such as easy Jet and Ryanair and it’s easy to see how simple it can be to construct a good value winter getaway.

The exercise becomes cheaper still by opting for accommodation in one of the many Lanzarote holiday apartments available in resorts such as Puerto del Carmen.  Where prices start from around £160 per week.
