Holidays in Mallorca

Some call it Majorca – others Mallorca.  But however you pronounce the name of the largest of the four Balearic Islands there is no doubting that this island is a hugely popular holiday destination.  Welcoming millions of tourists from around the world every year.

This popularity is easy to discern on arrival at Palma airport – Mallorca’s sole international terminal.  As the island is breathtakingly beautiful – boasting pine clad mountains and golden sand beaches.  Along with historic towns such as Pollensa and a host of things to do and see.

The holiday season in Mallorca extends from May through until late September.  As unlike say the Canaries the Balearics don’t enjoy sufficiently good weather during the winter to support tourism all year round.  However during the summer months the island basks in reliable sunshine and temperatures in the high 20´s (Celsius).

Mallorca has been a popular holiday haunt of the rich and famous for centuries.  As Chopin and Miro escaped here in the past whilst more modern day stars such as Michael Douglas ad Catherine Zeta Jones patronise the island today.

In some ways Mallorca is an island divided – as the south is still shrugging off a downmarket image that is the legacy of the package holiday boom years.  When resorts such as Magaluf became synonymous with the worst excesses of Boozy Brit holidays in the 1980´s.

This divide still exists today and as a result the north of the island is regarded as more upmarket.  Home to towns such as Pollensa and selection of some of the best and most upmarket hotels and holiday villas in Mallorca.  Whilst the south is still the place to head for if you’re keen to sample the nightlife.

There are in fact twenty different resorts around the island to choose from – some of which are popular with certain age groups and nationalities.  So it pays to research your ideal destination before making a booking.

Alcudia is a popular choice with many British holidaymakers.  Thanks to it’s location on the north coast and the fact that is boasts a massive beach – which is around 8km long.  Along with plenty of reasonably priced hotels and apartment complexes.

For something more upmarket head a little further along the coast for Puerto Pollensa.  Which was created as a sister coastal resort to the inland town of Pollensa – a former Roman settlement.

Whichever resort you choose Mallorca is just a two and a half hour flight from the UK and is serviced by all of the main holiday companies and cheap flight operators.
