Experience Lanzarote - Island Of Fire
Lanzarote is part of the Canary Islands. The Spanish owned archipelago that is located off the coast of West Africa, close to what used to be known as the Spanish Sahara. On the same line of latitude as parts of Florida and the Bahamas. As a result these seven specks of Spain have often been referred to as The Fortunate Islands as they enjoy a great warm climate all year round.
Lanzarote is the most easterly of the Canaries and boasts a unique character and identity. Largely forged as a result of a series of enormous volcanic eruptions which convulsed the island during the 18th and 19th centuries. Which left about one third of Lanzarote submerged beneath a sea of lava.
Today this twisted volcanic terrain is Lanzarote s most popular visitor attraction. As over 900,000 tourists travel to view the eerie scenery of the Timanfaya Volcano Park every year. An experience often likened to visiting another planet altogether.
Lanzarote s beaches are out of this world too. With local opinion fiercely divided over which is the most stunning stretch of sand. Some favour the raw allure of Famara in the north an 8km long horseshoe shaped bay that is much favoured by the island s surfing community. Whilst others prefer the unspoiled set of coves and bays at Papagayo located in the south of the island close to the popular resort of Playa Blanca.
Either way there are over 90 other beaches to explore, along with lots of pretty white washed villages and towns. Such as Haria in the Valley of 1000 Palms. Where locals plant a palm tree for every new born girl and two for a boy. Or Teguise, the former island capital which is home to a wealth of historic buildings, some of which date back as far as the 15th century.
The island only measures 58km by 38km so it is absolutely ideal for sightseeing. And there plenty of sights to see too. Such as the crazy creations of the island born artist C sar Manrique. Who built unique visitor attractions such as the Cactus Garden by working with Lanzarote s unique volcanic terrain.
There are plenty of accommodation options on the island, ranging from good value studio apartments in the main resorts though to chic rural hotels. The growth of the internet has also led to an explosion in the number of people booking their own Lanzarote villas and apartments direct online.
Lanzarote is just four hours flying time from the UK and the island is serviced by all of he main low cost operators, such as easyJet and Ryanair. With return fares starting at around 150. Whilst all of the main tour operators such as First Choice and Thomas Cook offer package holidays in Lanzarote.
