Escape to Puerto del Carmen This Winter

There’s never been a better time to visit Puerto del Carmen.  As the most popular resort on Lanzarote has just enjoyed a €16 million facelift – and now boasts a new pedestrianised sea front and marina.

Puerto del Carmen is not only the most popular resort on Lanzarote but also the oldest.  As it was here over forty years ago that foreign tourists first started to arrive on the island in serious numbers.  At a time when the village was better known as La Tiñosa and fishing was the main economic activity.

You´ll still find fishing boats in the Old Town harbour today.  But they are outnumbered by pleasure craft and excursion vessels.  Which treat guests to trips along the shoreline or across to the next door Canary Island of Fuerteventura.

Accommodation options in the resort have also evolved somewhat over time.  And there are now hundreds of apartment complexes and hotels in Puerto del Carmen for tourists to choose from.  Private rental properties are popular too – as there is a good concentration of villas in Puerto del Carmen in and around the harbour.

Puerto del Carmen’s prime assets are the resorts golden beaches.  Which provide the focal point for holidaymakers during the day.  Come nightfall visitors head for the main seafront promenade of the Avenida del Las Playas.  Which is home to hundreds of restaurants, serving a wide variety of different cuisines.  Such as Mexican, Italian and traditional Canarian fare.  Which is characterised by fresh fish and more traditional local dishes such as goat and the famous wrinkled potatoes.  Which are cooked using lots of salty sea water.

Puerto del Carmen is centrally located on the island’s south east shoreline.  Which makes it an ideal base for exploring Lanzarote as all of the key attractions are within a twenty minute drive.

Explore the unique volcanic wine fields of La Geria, The Volcano Park and historic old towns such as Teguise.  Which was the capital of Lanzarote up until 1852.  Car hire in Lanzarote is much cheaper than on other Spanish islands and the roads are both quiet and safe.  So it’s easy to get out and explore.

Puerto del Carmen is an ideal choice for families too.  As the beaches here are well protected and shelve gently into the sea.  Whilst there are plenty of child friendly attractions on hand such as the Rancho Texas theme park.  Home to a sizeable zoo as well as plenty of Wild West themed fun and games.
